1920s Borgel case
for Mappin

A gold cased 1920s wristwatch. The enamel dial having Roman numerals with a red 12 and a sub seconds dial. The movement marked 15 jewels Swiss made. The 9ct gold Borgel case in crisp condition hallmarked (Edinburge) for 1929 and marked FB.Francois Borgel of Geneva patented his famous watch case design in 1891. The Borgel case was an early attempt to make wrist watches resistant to dust and moisture. Manufacture of Borgel cases continued after the death of Francois Borgel in 1912 by Taubert & Fils one of the finest Geneva-based case makers and specialized in water-resistant cases. They worked with many firms, including Patek Philippe and Vacheron Constantin.
